INNOVATION IN THE AIR

Our purpose is to bring context-appropriate medical technology to the market at affordable prices.

Who is Umoya?

We are a collective of engineers, doctors, designers, 3D printing specialists, and project managers from various industries, including mining. Our collaboration began in 2020 with a shared vision of saving lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to find innovative solutions to assist patients with breathing difficulties. Together, we developed cutting-edge respiratory and non-invasive ventilator solutions to address the current gaps in respiratory therapy in resource-constrained environments. Additionally, we continuously explore context-appropriate medical solutions for our continent.

The team was initially established in East London, where the realities of limited resources in healthcare provision in the Eastern Cape became evident.

The Umoya team rapidly expanded and now encompasses technical and manufacturing expertise spread across South Africa. As a social enterprise, we operate as a registered South African company (Umoya Org (Pty) Ltd; Reg No: 2016/320695/07). We utilise all of our trading surplus to develop new products or donate to organisations with similar objectives. Our primary focus lies in providing affordable health products and services suitable for low-resource settings.

Our flagship commercial product, the OxERA™, was our first achievement, and we already have several new products and services available or in development.
